Hitchcock

Quick unfinished watercolor sketch.

Me by me

I made a little video of me while painting myself which you can watch here! Before I started painting I did two very quick pre-sketches to get a shape. The final watercolor sketch was done in about one hour.
Hope you enjoy!

Rembrandt (the process..)

          Full finished piece

                                           Detail

                            2. Sketch

                           1. Sketch

Here you can see and read my little process on Rembrandt..
At first I did a few sketches. After getting a blurry shape of the posture and headshape I started to think a bit more about his face and shadow parts. So I started the second sketch where I came more close to the shape I had in mind. When I finished the second sketch I directly began to paint on the canvas (50x60cm ; 19,6x23,6inch).
I learned a lot while painting because I gave myself a couple of challenges! With Rembrandt I felt like I had to start something quite directly on the canvas without ''too'' many pre-sketches. To me his paintings are always alive. So I tried to get him alive, too. I didn't want to plan this piece that much. (I was maybe also too excited to start a big painting with acrylics)
To me the challenges were a lot of fun, for example getting this kind of oilish effect with acrylics, I was struggling with building up the details without ignoring Rembrandt's spontaneously brushstrokes. It was also very important to me to not copy his style but with finding something between his selfportrait from 1661 and my interpretation. (This is my second acrylic painting and took me about one and a half week)

I hope you like the painting! And I hope these little insights were interesting or even helpful for you!
This piece was done for the Eurocon 2013 in Vienna!

'Captain Jack'!

My very first acrylic caricature. It was truly a challenge because it's totally different to what I'm used to when I paint with watercolors. I hope to be able to explore more with acrylics in near future.
Hope you guys like it :)

Mads Mikkelsen

At first I did little sketches to try out the picture I had in mind. Then I started a watercolor (which is very small) on a new watercolor paper called "Lanavanguard" from Lana which is very shiny. It is totally cool to work on it. At first it was a bit hard, because I erased my pencil lines and when I started to paint I saw that the paper didn't absorbe the watercolor anymore (as you can see on the ear and between the ear and the eye.) But after a while looking at it, to me, it turns into something good. Those "accidents" are always surprising and fun to look at.
Cheers
